Blizzard Entertainment, the developer of renowned games like World of Warcraft and Overwatch, has built a reputation for delivering high-quality games with a focus on storytelling, multiplayer engagement, and dedicated fan communities. Its flagship gaming convention, BlizzCon, has been a key part of its success since debuting in 2005.

The event is known for bringing together fans from around the world for game releases, developer panels, esports tournaments, and exclusive content. BlizzCon has helped Blizzard connect with its fan base, and its popularity has only grown since, making it one of the most anticipated gaming events globally.

After BlizzCon was cancelled last year, fans hoped it would return this year to celebrate the event’s 20th anniversary. However, Blizzard Entertainment has cancelled this year’s event as well. This marks the first time since its inception in 2005 that it BlizzCon has been cancelled for two consecutive years—2024 and 2025.

Importance: Skipping this year as well may dampen fan’s enthusiasm and engagement, potentially weakening Blizzard’s community. However, since the developer is promising a “full-strength” return in 2026, fans will expect a bigger and better event. Now, the company must deliver major announcements and experiences to cover up.

The event is skipping 2025, and will return in September 2026, with dates set for Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13, at the Anaheim Convention Center in California. Interestingly, Blizzard has not provided a reason for BlizzCon’s postponement.

BlizzCon 2025 Cancelled! A Recap Of Recent Disruptions

With just a couple of exceptions since 2005, BlizzCon ran annually until 2019. However, the event was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID and was held digitally in 2021-only to be cancelled again in 2022. BlizzCon made a comeback in 2023 but was scrapped again in 2024. Now, Blizzard’s press release confirms that BlizzCon is cancelled for 2025 as well.

With multiple event cancelations in recent years, some may speculate about Blizzard’s internal challenges, including restructuring under Microsoft’s ownership.

In a press release, the franchise says.

BlizzCon has been a cornerstone of Blizzard’s history since 2005, allowing us to connect with our community and our players directly. For 2026, alongside BlizzCon staples like Opening Ceremony, in-depth panels, the Darkmoon Faire, friendly competition, hands-on gameplay, and more, we aim to meaningfully elevate this iconic celebration and create an unforgettable experience.

We are building this event just like we build our games: with a deep commitment to our players, with respect for our players’ connections to our universes, and as a celebration of the strength of the bonds formed through shared adventure.
