Despite the initial concerns over the Nintendo’s Switch 2’s pricing, including both the console and its software, the demand for the new console has quickly surpassed expectations. In several regions, the hype surrounding its release has been so intense that accessories like MicroSD Express cards have already sold out.
Responding to this unexpected surge in demand, Nintendo has ramped up production. Retailers in multiple regions report waitlists and high interests, reflecting the strong anticipation ahead of launch.
Now, industry analyst Pelham Smithers at Pelham Smithers Associates firm suggests (via Bloomberg) the Switch 2 could enjoy the biggest console launch in history. Citing its explosive pre-order performance in Japan—where a third of global Switch users reside—Smithers estimates global pre-orders may already be around 6.6 million units, setting a stage for a record-breaking debut.
Importance: The overwhelming demand for the Nintendo Switch 2 sales, driven by strong reception on pre-orders and market anticipation, highlights Nintendo’s ability to generate excitement and set new standards in the gaming industry. This success may influence future console launches, shaping production strategies and competition while reshaping consumer expectations for gaming hardware.

Switch 2 Poised To Challenge Previous Consoles Launch Sales Records
The PS4 and PS5 hold the record for the biggest console launches in history, each selling 4.5 million units in their first two months. This sets a high benchmark for the Nintendo Switch 2, which is rapidly gaining momentum.
The PS5 despite facing stock shortages and challenges from COVID pandemic, and scalping, likely would have surpassed the PlayStation 4’s launch numbers if not for these issues. In contrast, the Nintendo Switch 2 is poised for a stronger launch, with less external disruption, although its release is complicated by the fluctuating U.S. tariff situation.
Strong Demand And Tariff Issues Complicate Switch 2 Launch
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa warned that may players in Japan may miss out on Switch 2 pre-orders, as 2.2 million applied for the My Nintendo pre-order lottery. Pre-orders also opened in U.S. this week, with players facing difficulties securing the console online.

While pricing in Japan fueled strong interest, tariffs linked to President Trump’s trade policies have complicated production in the U.S., especially with units assembled in Vietnam. Despite these challenges, Nintendo’s shares rose to 5.5%.
With the overwhelming demand for the Switch 2 sales and production challenges ahead, do you think Nintendo will be able to meet the high expectations and surpass previous console sales record?
