Sea Of Thieves Was The Most Downloaded PS5 Game In May

Microsoft’s Sea of Thieves emerged as the most downloaded game for the PlayStation 5 in both the United States and Europe last month, according to Sony’s recently published top 20 charts for PS5 and PS4 on the PlayStation Blog.

The top 20 download charts for PS5 in both Europe and the US featured four Microsoft-owned games. Besides the leading Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and Fallout 4 also made it to the lists. On the PS4, Minecraft maintained its dominance, topping the download charts in both regions for May.

Importance: Microsoft’s multiplatform approach appears to be highly effective, as these games are achieving remarkable success on rival platforms. However, this raises concerns about the role of Xbox consoles in the gaming industry, especially when their biggest attracting factor, exclusives, may no longer be exclusive.

As stated above, this success highlights Microsoft’s growing influence on rival platforms, a trend bolstered by the continuous popularity of games like Call of Duty and Minecraft. The company recently announced plans to expand its cross-platform offerings, starting with titles such as Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded for PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.

Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, has emphasized his openness to bringing games to various platforms. This sentiment aligns with recent reports suggesting that Xbox is contemplating releasing a newly remastered version of Halo Combat Evolved on PlayStation, with some rumors even claiming a complete remake of the Halo trilogy for the PS5.

Additionally, there is speculation about other major titles like Gears of War, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Starfield, and Indiana Jones potentially being made available on competing consoles.

Further underscoring this cross-platform strategy, Microsoft announced at the recent Xbox Games Showcase that Doom: The Dark Ages will be released for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5.

This strategy reflects Microsoft’s broader vision of breaking down platform barriers, aiming to reach a wider audience across different gaming ecosystems.
