Earlier this year, speculations swirled around God of War’s 20th anniversary. Rumors pointed towards a return to Greece, with talk of either a remaster collection or even a new game featuring a younger Kratos set in his homeland. Many believed that this Greek-based project would headline the anniversary celebrations.
However, those expectations have now shifted. As the franchise’s 20th anniversary on March 22 passed with only minor celebrations—such as God of War Ragnarök armor and skins, a tribute video and new merchandise—Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb has since fueled fresh speculations.
Posting on Bluesky, Jeff Grubb revealed that a new God of War project set in Greece is still on track for release later this year on PS5. However, God of War Greek won’t be the long-rumored remaster collection, but rather completely new side project. Grubb advised fans to “set your expectations lower,” suggesting that it will be a more compact, standalone experience.
Importance: The significance of this news is twofold. First, this project marks Kratos’ long-awaited return to Greek methodology, offering fans a deeper look into his past. Second, it also reflects Sony’s push for smaller, standalone experiences to complement major releases.

God Of War Greek Side Project And Previous Rumors
Interestingly, Grubb himself had been linked to earlier rumors about a remastered collection of the original God of War games, supposedly set for release on the 20th anniversary. However, he has since clarified that he was never directly told about such a remaster collection, suggesting that previous reports tying him to this rumor were inaccurate and misinterpreted.
Remaster Collection Rumors Were Misinterpreted, Says Grubb
Instead, Grubb checked with a source who denied any God of War Greek setting news at the State of Play but left the door open for an anniversary reveal. The “remaster collection rumor” tied to Grubb wasn’t based on concrete info he had—it was mostly media and fan speculation.

For now, fans will have to wait and see what Sony Sonta Monica has planned for the God of War Greek side project later this year. Until then, speculation around Kratos’ return to Greece continues to build.
