Cyberpunk 2077 is seeing a major resurgence on Steam, with concurrent player counts rising sharply following the announcement of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2.
According to SteamDB, the game’s concurrent players surged to over 66,000 on July 6, marking the highest count since February this year. In the past six months, average daily player numbers hovered between 30,000 and 40,000, making the jump a significant milestone for a four-and-a-half-year-old single-player title.
This upswing coincides with the official announcement of Edgerunners 2 at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles. During the panel, Netflix and CD Projekt Red confirmed that Season 2 would return with a new 10-episode standalone arc, directed by Kai Ikarashi and written by Bartosz Sztybor.

The follow-up promises a darker, bloodier narrative centered on themes of redemption and revenge, complete with a new cast and character designer Kanno Ichigo, while still maintaining ties to the world of Cyberpunk 2077. The show is currently in production for a Netflix release in the future, and recently introduced its new director.
This renewed interest mirrors the impact of the first Edgerunners series in 2022, which drove a notable spike in player numbers on Steam during the release of the Phantom Liberty update. Back then, Steam charts revealed peaks near 250,000 concurrent users, and the original anime caused similar boosts in engagement.
Fans on Reddit also credit Edgerunners for re-engaging lapsed players—some noted the game was “borderline DNR” before the anime reignited interest, and now it’s trending once again.
Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red continues to support Cyberpunk 2077 despite earlier statements labeling updates as “complete.” When the company first hinted the 2.2 update might be its last, fans were surprised to see patch 2.3 announced shortly after.
Although the update was delayed from its initial June 26 launch date for quality reasons, it’s still expected on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This ongoing support, paired with media attention surrounding Edgerunners 2, will likely continue to drive player engagement in the months ahead.
Looking forward, the combination of a new anime series and planned in-game updates gives Cyberpunk 2077 renewed momentum.
Whether the next player count peak coincides with patch 2.3, or aligns with the Season 2 release, CD Projekt Red and Netflix’s coordinated efforts appear to have succeeded in reviving interest in the game years after its launch. This synergy highlights how cross-media storytelling can sustain and reenergize gaming communities long after original release windows.
