A well-known gaming leaker has shared potential details about Sony’s next-gen PlayStation console, the PS6, including when it might be announced, when it could release, and how it ties into the rumored PlayStation handheld.

According to leaker Detective Seeds on X (formerly Twitter), a PlayStation hardware engineer revealed that Sony is expected to announce the PS6 in 2028, with a release set for late Fall or early Winter 2029. Developer kits will allegedly be distributed around Spring 2026, coinciding with the PS5 Pro’s rumored upgrade to FSR4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 4).

This lines up with comments from Mark Cerny, lead architect of the PS5, who recently told Tom’s Guide that he doesn’t expect the PS6 to arrive anytime soon, though work is already underway.

“What I’m trying to do is prepare for the next generation of consoles, so my timeframe is multi-year,” – Mark Cerny

According to a Playstation engineer working on the hardware side of the house; The PS6 will be announced in 2028 and release late fall/ early winter 2029.
Devs kits are estimated to be distributed to developers around Spring 2026 at the same time PS5 pro gets the upgrade to…

    PS6 Handheld & Technical Details

In addition to the home console, insider KeplerL2 has shared several technical details regarding a PlayStation handheld, which may also be part of the PS6 ecosystem:

    • It’s expected to feature 16GB of RAM
    • Runs on a 15W SoC built on a 3nm process
    • May offer 1/3 the memory bandwidth of the PS5, but with improved memory compression and cache (4MB L2 + 16MB MALL)
    • Target performance sits between Xbox Series S and PS5, per KeplerL2

Despite lower specs, the handheld is believed to be capable of running PS5 games, albeit at reduced resolution or framerate. The goal seems to be achieving backward compatibility while keeping power consumption and heat in check.

    GPU Architecture: Next-Gen AMD Tech

According to a separate leak by zhangzhonghao from Chiphell, the PS6 will feature a new AMD GPU architecture, combining elements from RDNA 4 and CDNA. This hybrid architecture is designed to improve ray tracing and AI-based upscaling, marking a leap forward from the PS5 Pro’s hardware.

The Sony PS6 is not official yet, however, recent statements from the company suggest that its development is indeed underway, and leaks have been accelerating in recent months. Sony previously said the next console is already “top of mind,” adding credibility to the idea that early hardware planning is already well in motion.
