Following the underwhelming reception of Battlefield 2042, Electronic Art is making an aggressive push to reclaim dominance in the FPS genre. The next installment in the series, tentatively known as Battlefield 6, is being positioned as a direct competitor to juggernauts like COD and Fortnite.

With promises of a sprawling single-player campaign, a revamped battle royale mode, and the return of fan-favorite sandbox feature, backed by a staggering investment reportedly exceeding $400 million, EA’s vision is nothing short of monumental.

However, that ambition is reportedly coming at a steep cost. According to a recent report from Ars Technica, developers working on Battlefield 6are facing extreme pressure, long hours, and mounting mental exhaustion due to the game’s overwhelming scope and unrealistic expectations.

Importance: These internal struggles and disorganized development, despite EA’s massive investment and star-studded leadership, are threatening to derail the project. If not addressed, they could not only delay the game’s release but also impact its quality and success in an increasingly competitive market.

Battlefield 6 aims to rival Call of Duty and Fortnite, but internal struggles threaten the project’s success

    Chaotic Development And Misaligned studios

Sources describe a chaotic work environment where multiple studios are struggling to stay aligned, deadlines are tight, and key components of the game—such as the single-player campaign—are lagging far behind schedule.

Several developers have taken extended mental health leave, citing burnout and frustration with EA’s ineffective support system. The closure of Ridgeline Games, originally tasked with leading the campaign, only added to the turmoil, forcing other teams to start from scratch with very little to build on.

Cultural Divide And Unrealistic Expectations Challenge Battlefield 6

However, cultural differences between the Swedish-based DICE team and U.S. leadership have further complicated development. While DICE prioritizes delivering a high-quality gameplay experience, the U.S. executives emphasize financial targets and profitability.

The ambition to compete with giants like Call of Duty and Fortnite has led EA to set exceptionally high expectations—aiming for 100 million players over the game’s lifetime. Yet, historical data shows Battlefield’s most successful title, Battlefield 1, reached only about 30 million players.

Behind the scenes DICE and supporting studios navigate cultural clashes and tight deadlines on Battlefield 6

Ultimately, battlefield 6 development struggles reveal the high cost of chasing blockbuster success at any expense. Is the gaming industry ready to prioritize developer well-being over relentless ambition?
