A new Xbox job posting has sparked excitement and speculation among fans, as it suggests Microsoft could be forming a new in-house game development studio. With over 30 game studios under its umbrella across Xbox Game Studios, ZeniMax Media, and Activision Blizzard, Microsoft already has a robust lineup of development teams. However, this new role hints that the tech giant might be expanding its creative capabilities further.

Most of Microsoft’s first-party studios were acquired over time, but a few were built from scratch, such as Xbox Game Studio, The Coalition, Turn 10 Studios, and World’s Edge. The most recent addition to its homegrown lineup was The Initiative, founded in 2018 in Santa Monica. The Initiative is currently working on the Perfect Dark reboot, which, after early challenges, is now on track with a smooth development pace.

The excitement for a potential new studio stems from a job listing for an “Executive Producer” to lead an unspecified game development team. The listing references roles based in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area, which could indicate that this team is still in its formative stages. Notably, Microsoft isn’t accepting applications until late February, reinforcing the idea that this project is still in the early planning phase.

Industry insider eXtas1s, who discovered the job posting, described it as being for a “top-level secret” project. According to the insider, the listing likely pertains to a brand-new studio and not an existing team. Some speculate that the reveal could mirror the announcement of The Initiative during E3 2018. Alternatively, the role might oversee multiple development teams, which would explain the lack of a specific studio name in the listing.

If Microsoft is indeed creating a new studio, it will likely take years before fans see its projects. However, with an impressive lineup of Xbox titles set for release in the coming years—such as Doom: The Dark Ages, Avowed, South of Midnight, Ninja Gaiden 4, and Fable—players will have plenty to enjoy while waiting for this potential new team to debut.
