Tencent Increases Stake in FromSoftware’s Parent Company Kadokawa by 1.11%
Tencent is one of the largest and most valuable multinational conglomerates in the world. The company is well-known for its innovative and strategic holdings around the globe.
Earlier in 2021, Tencent purchased a 6.86% stake in Kadokawa for ¥30 billion ($264 million), forming a capital and business alliance with Japan’s publishing giant and FromSoftware’s parent company.
The giant has now further increased its stake in Kadokawa.
Today, a shareholding report submitted by Tencent’s subsidiary, SixJoy Hong Kong Limited, associated with the company’s strategic acquisitions and business expansions revealed that the company has acquired another 1.11% of stake in Kadokawa, bringing its total holdings to 7.97% in FromSoftware’s parent company.
Importance: Tencent’s increased stake reflects its strategy of investing in prominent game creators and publishers worldwide. By acquiring additional shares in Kadokawa, Tencent strengthens its position in the gaming ecosystem.

Benefits Arising From Tencent And Kadokawa’s Partnership
Since FromSoftware has produced several critically acclaimed titles, including Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring, it will benefit Tencent in global market reach and generate potential revenue.
Additionally, the purchase will strengthen joint efforts in the animation and gaming sectors and provide Kadokawa with reach to China.
Tencent’s Major Global Holdings
Other than that, Tencent holds almost a 40% share in Epic Games, the developer of the highly acclaimed Fortnite and the Unreal Engine, giving it a significant foothold in the western gaming market. Other portfolio companies include Snap Inc. (Snapchat), Ubisoft, Spotify, Tesla, Supercell, and Riot Games.
Kadokawa: A Multimedia Powerhouse
However, Kadokawa is more than just a publisher of manga, light novels and anime. It is a media conglomerate with interests in films, video games and publishing. The franchise gained even more appreciation from its Elden Ring game, co-developed with the famous author of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin.

While Tencent increases its Stake in global gaming and entertainment industries, it solidifies its position as a dominant player in the sector. On that note, what are your thoughts on this development? Share your comments below!
