Ahead of the Nintendo Direct on April 2, anticipation grew as announcements teased potential game reveals, hardware updates, and new collaborations. Now, following the event, one of the key announcements has been officially unveiled.
Among the exciting reveals, one standout moment was the confirmation of Fortnite coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, along with full support for both Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5. This ensures enhanced graphics, smoother gameplay, and the potential for more Unreal Engine-powered games to be optimized for the Switch 2, delivering a next-gen gaming experience.
With enhanced hardware, the Switch 2 will run Fortnite at up to 120 fps and 4K resolution when docked, addressing past technical issues. Players can expect a smoother, more enjoyable experience on launch day, with many already expressing their excitement on social media.
Importance: Fortnite hits Switch 2 as a significant milestone, addressing long-standing performance issues that plagued the original Switch version. The integration of Unreal Engine 4 & 5 ensures that not only Fortnite, but also other future games powered by Unreal Engine will benefit from enhanced visuals and performance.
Official Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Orders
Reports of Switch 2 pre-orders going live on April 2 were questioned after Best Buy Canada removed a related post and another retailer flagged the date as an error. Now, following the official announcement, Switch 2 pre-orders are set to open on April 9 at major retailers, both online and in stores, with options including the standard Switch 2 for $450 or a bundle with Mario Kart World for $500.
Switch 2’s New Features
One of the most exciting additions is backward compatibility, allowing most physical and digital Swtich1 games to be playable on new system. The console will also support a new “C button” for enhanced communication features in multiplayer games like Mario Kart World.
Moreover, Nintendo Online subscribers will gain access to a selection of enhanced GameCube titles, complete with a new GameCube-style controller. However, original Switch microSD cards will not be compatible, though a data transfer function will help players migrate their content.
Other Major Hits Coming to Switch 2, Including Fortnite
The Nintendo Direct even also showcased an immersive lineup of launch titles, including Mario Kart World, the first-open world Mario Kart game, and major third-party ports like Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, Borderlands 4. Other notable, releases include Hitman: World of Assassination, Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut, Hyrule Warriors, NBK 2K, WWE 2K25, and Duskbloods.
