The announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 has created a buzz in the gaming world, especially after a teaser for a new Mario Kart game hinted at a groundbreaking feature: the possibility of 24-player races. This marks a significant upgrade from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which supports a maximum of 12 players online.

Although the trailer didn’t directly showcase 24 racers in action, the starting grid clearly displayed 24 positions, strongly suggesting this exciting new player count. Such an increase promises to amplify the chaos and thrill of Mario Kart’s multiplayer experience, which has been a cornerstone of the series’ popularity for years.

This leap in player capacity is a clear indication of the Switch 2’s advanced capabilities. The console’s improved hardware is expected to provide far greater processing power than its predecessor, enabling the seamless handling of larger, more dynamic races.

If realized, the addition of 24-player racing will push the limits of the game’s visuals and performance. Many speculate the game will be titled Mario Kart 9, however, the official reveal trailer stopped short of confirming this.

Rumors about a March 3 release date have also been debunked, as Nintendo announced a special Nintendo Direct event for April 2. This points to a later launch for the Switch 2, likely in the second half of 2025.

Nintendo has planned hands-on preview events for the spring, concluding with a major showcase in Seoul on June 1. This timeline suggests that the Switch 2, along with the next Mario Kart installment, won’t hit the market before mid-2025.

While more details are awaited, the prospect of 24-player Mario Kart on the Nintendo Switch 2 has set high expectations. This innovation has the potential to transform not just the Mario Kart experience but also the standards for multiplayer racing games, raising the bar for what’s possible in the genre.
