Nexus Mods has confirmed it will not ban AI-generated game modifications from its platform, instead introducing mandatory AI disclosure requirements, clearer content labels and stronger protections for mod creators. The updated policy, announced on November 3, 2026, follows months of community debate over generative AI in PC game modding.

The company is requiring creators to declare whether artificial intelligence was used when uploading new mods. Existing uploads will receive a 60-day grace period ending January 2, 2027, after which Nexus Mods will begin enforcing the updated requirements.

In an official announcement published by community representative Foledinho, also known as Victor, Nexus Mods explained that prohibiting AI-generated content would be difficult to enforce because AI tools are already involved in many stages of mod development. These range from code autocompletion to creating textures, character voices and complete game assets.

The platform argued that a blanket prohibition could discourage creators from admitting they used AI without necessarily preventing the technology from appearing in uploaded modifications. Instead, Nexus Mods wants players to have greater visibility into how individual mods were developed.

Under the new requirements, every newly uploaded mod must include a declaration about AI usage. Creators publishing AI-assisted modifications must also provide a public explanation describing where and how the technology contributed to their work.

Nexus Mods will make AI-related tags more prominent on mod pages, placing them immediately after adult-content tags. The change is intended to make AI disclosures easier to identify before downloading modifications.

Additional content preference controls are planned to let users adjust how much AI-generated material appears while browsing. These settings will initially target game pages and the homepage, with search filtering to follow later.

The approach reflects a broader shift toward user-controlled AI content discovery across gaming platforms. For example, itch.io has introduced a No AI filter for game search results, allowing players to exclude games disclosed as containing generative AI.

Nexus Mods is also developing additional permission controls to protect creators whose work might otherwise be reused for AI-assisted modifications or model training.

The planned permissions will cover AI usage and training, alongside forks and derivative modifications. New permission options will default to an “Ask me” setting, requiring other creators to request authorization rather than assume permission has been granted. Existing permission choices will not automatically be reset.

The company reiterated that it will not use uploaded mods to train AI models or sell or license those modifications to organizations that intend to use them for AI training. It also confirmed that content incorporating another author’s work without the required permission will not be hosted.

However, not every proposed change is available immediately. Nexus Mods said improvements to permissions and content discovery will arrive progressively as development is completed, while mandatory disclosure and clearer labeling are its immediate priorities.

The platform also addressed concerns surrounding Donation Points, its reward system for mod creators. According to its internal figures, modifications carrying the “AI-Generated Content” tag have received 2.13% of all Donation Points distributed so far in 2026.

Nexus Mods has decided against changing the reward rules for now. It explained that removing earnings from creators who disclose AI usage could discourage transparency, while changes affecting creator compensation require careful consideration.

Security was another concern raised in the announcement. Nexus Mods acknowledged that AI tools could make producing malicious code disguised within game modifications easier.

Between November 2025 and October 2026, its moderation team manually reviewed and cleared 3,164 uploads, more than four times the figure recorded during the preceding year. Approximately 20,000 uploads were quarantined for additional security checks over the past year, representing a twelvefold increase.

The company said it is investing in security tools and specialist staff. Where suspicious behavior cannot be adequately explained, moderators may request source code and decline to host a modification if safety concerns remain unresolved.

For existing mod creators, the compliance deadline is January 2, 2027. Nexus Mods will use the intervening period to review reports, communicate requirements and allow authors to update their disclosures.

After the deadline, creators who fail to correct missing declarations or permission settings following staff notification may face warnings, moderation actions, account restrictions or removal of their modifications.

Nexus Mods acknowledged that identifying undisclosed AI-generated content remains imperfect. Enforcement will initially depend heavily on manual moderation and community reports, meaning some incorrectly labeled or undisclosed modifications could escape detection.

The new policy establishes a framework in which AI-assisted mods remain permitted, but creators must disclose their use of the technology and respect the rights of other mod authors. Players will gain more information about AI involvement immediately, with additional filtering options planned for future updates.
