In today’s fast-paced gaming industry, early access releases have become a double-edged sword—offering studios a chance to gain feedback while exposing them to intense public scrutiny. As expectations rise and player patience thins, even the most acclaimed developers can find themselves navigating turbulent waters in the pursuit of perfection.

Mario Studios, the independent developer renowned for the critically acclaimed Ori and the Blind Forest series, is no stranger to high expectations. Their latest title, No Rest for the Wicked, a dark, atmospheric action RPG, launched in early access to considerable anticipation. While praised for its visuals and ambition, the game’s challenging mechanics and ongoing development have sparked mixed reactions from players. Amid this feedback-driven environment, the stakes for indie studios can quickly escalate—something Moon Studio is now grappling with firsthand.

In a recent statement, studio head Thomas Mahler revealed that Moon Studios may shut down if negative Steam reviews continue to impact sales of No Rest for the Wicked. Mahler expressed concern over the financial strain caused by review bombing, warning that without a significant turnaround in community support the studio might not survive the coming months.

Importance: This situation highlights the vulnerability of indie studios in a review-driven market, where early access feedback can make or break a game’s success. Moon Studios’ warning reflects how negative perception—even if premature—can threaten creative projects and livelihoods, raising broader concerns about the impact of user reviews on game development.

The fate of Moon Studios' No Rest for the Wicked hangs in the balance as review bombing hampers its progress and commercial success

Moon Studios Faces Review Bombing Challenges For Its New Game

Although Mahler later clarified that there’s no immediate financial danger, his initial remarks were intended to push back against what he described as politically motivated review bombing. He emphasized that every piece of feedback is being read and considered. Referencing similar challenges faced by other early access games like Path of Exile 2, Mahler stressed that even established studios can struggle to recover from sustained drops in user rating.

Challenges Faced By No Rest For The Wicked In Early Access

Despite its strong artistic direction and inspiration from titles like Diablo and Soulsborne games, No Rest of the Wicked currently holds a “mixed” rating on Steam. Players have pointed out issues beyond the game’s punishing difficulty, such as the lack of quality-of-life features, unclear mechanics, and an excessive reliance on grinding materials. These criticisms, while common in early access titles, have significantly influenced public perception and may be hindering the game’s commercial momentum.

Xbox One’s Struggle And The Rise Of Moon Studios

The challenging era of Xbox One, marked by poor console reveals and a lack of strong first-party content, led to a significant shift in gaming landscape. While Microsoft struggled, one bright spot emerged in Moon Studios, whose Opri and the Blind Forest and its sequel Ori and the Will of the Wisps stood out as a rare exception in an otherwise lackluster generation.

These critically acclaimed titles were among the few to earn widespread praise, helping solidifying Moon Studios as a developer to watch, despite the broader challenges facing the platform.

Ori and the Blind Forest was a critical success during Xbox One’s struggling generation, helping put Moon Studios on the map.

Early access can provide vital funding and feedback, but for studios like Moon Studios, it also risks harsh early judgement. No Res for the Wicked faces pressure to meet high expectations, and without support like major giants, Moon Studios may shut down if it struggles to reach its potential.
