The long-rumored Halo: Combat Evolved remake may not include multiplayer, according to a new claim from leaker Rebs Gaming. While Microsoft has yet to confirm the remake’s existence, the persistent reports and emerging details are painting a clearer picture of what fans can expect—though not all of it is good news.
Rebs Gaming shared that two sources connected to the development said they had heard nothing about multiplayer being part of the project. If true, this could mean the upcoming remake is focused entirely on single-player campaign content, marking a major shift for one of the most influential shooters in console history.
The original Halo: CE played a massive role in popularizing multiplayer gaming on consoles, so leaving it out in a remake could spark controversy.
The rumored remake is believed to be targeting a 2026 release window, lining up with the 25th anniversary of the original Xbox classic. According to Rebs, development began in 2023, even though earlier reports suggested pre-production didn’t begin until 2024.
The conflicting timelines might be the result of outdated or misinterpreted information, which is common in long-lead development cycles.
There’s also talk that the Halo: CE remake may be one of the first major Xbox titles to launch on PlayStation 5, following Microsoft’s broader push toward multi-platform publishing. If that happens, the lack of a multiplayer mode could also mean no crossplay support, making the release feel limited compared to more modern Halo titles.

While fans were excited at the idea of revisiting Combat Evolved with modern visuals and gameplay enhancements, the potential absence of multiplayer—and possibly co-op—has tempered some of that excitement. Halo Studios is expected to make an official announcement at the Halo World Championship in October, where more concrete information may finally be shared.
Whether or not the lack of multiplayer is set in stone remains unclear, but if campaign-only is the current direction, it could be a divisive decision. The studio may be taking a “story-first” approach, possibly to gauge interest or lay groundwork for a larger remake strategy.
