The next chapter in the God of War franchise may take players in a bold new direction—both narratively and mechanically. According to recent leaks, a new title in development will star Deimos, the long-forgotten brother of Kratos, and feature a 2.5D Metroidvania style, deviating heavily from the cinematic action-adventure formula fans have come to expect.
Since its 2018 reboot, God of War has seen a resurgence in popularity, not only dominating on PlayStation consoles but also finding success on PC. That new wave of attention has sparked speculation about where the series might go next, especially with rumors swirling around a potential shift toward Egyptian mythology.
But if this latest report holds true, the next step might be backward—to Greek mythology—with a game that plays very differently from recent entries.
This information was revealed in a recent tweet from MysticMsa3d, who shared a chat involving known leaker Shpeshal_Nick. The conversation claimed that a new God of War Metroidvania game centered around Deimos is currently in development.

The title is said to be heavily influenced by Blasphemous, the dark and punishing Metroidvania from 2019, and is allegedly being co-developed by Mega Cat Studios (Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit), with Santa Monica Studio overseeing the project.
Further support came from a ResetEra thread, where various users echoed the same details: Deimos as the main protagonist, a return to Greek mythology, and a gameplay format closer to 2D exploration-based titles.
This approach mirrors a trend among major IPs experimenting with side-scrolling or Metroidvania gameplay—most notably Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which released to critical acclaim but underwhelming sales.

If true, the Deimos-led God of War game may be unveiled sometime in 2025, potentially during a high-profile PlayStation event like the State of Play, which is expected on June 4. The timing would be fitting, as 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the God of War series. A new game announcement would likely go a long way in addressing fans who were underwhelmed by the relatively quiet celebrations back in March.
As Santa Monica Studio looks to expand the God of War universe in new and experimental directions, bringing Deimos into the spotlight could serve both as fan service and a fresh start for spin-off stories within the franchise.
