Sims 5 Seems Pretty Unlikely As EA Shifts Franchise Approach

EA has announced a shift in its approach to The Sims franchise, moving beyond the traditional numbered releases.

Instead of replacing older titles with new ones, the company aims to create a variety of Sims experiences while continuing to support The Sims 4, which has been played by over 80 million people since its release 10 years ago.

Importance: Progress is a crucial aspect of The Sims games, but with each new release, there’s no option to carry over progress to the next title, which results in all the hard work being lost.

The Sims 4 Will Seemingly Be Around For A Long Time

According to EA’s vice president and general manager of The Sims franchise, Kate Gorman in a recent interview with Variety, the company plans to expand The Sims universe without resetting players’ progress. Future content will allow players to continue their creations and experiences across new titles, without starting from scratch.

Gorman emphasized that The Sims 4 will still receive updates and expansions, while new projects will provide more ways to play across different platforms.

One of these new projects is Project Rene, which was first announced in 2022. The free-to-play title will offer both solo and multiplayer gameplay, allowing for shared experiences across multiple devices, including mobile. EA is planning a small invite-only playtest for Project Rene this fall, focusing on its multiplayer aspects.

In addition to Project Rene, EA is also preparing to release The Sims 4 Creator Kits this November, which will allow players to access in-game assets crafted by the community. This is the first time such content will be officially published by EA. Furthermore, two games from the MySims series will be re-released for Nintendo Switch.

EA also confirmed reports that a feature film adaptation of The Sims is in development. The movie is being produced by LuckyChap, the production company behind the hit film Barbie, and will be directed by Loki’s Kate Herron.

Moreover, Skate, which has been in playtesting for over a year, is also set for early access in 2025, as the company continues to expand its lineup of live-service and innovative game experiences.
