    Superhero games have become a major force in the gaming industry, with studios racing to bring iconic l’s characters to life. Among them, Marvel’s Black Panther has stood out as a highly anticipated title, drawing excitement from fans and developers alike.

    However, Electronic Arts has a well-documented history of studio closures and game cancellations, often linked to internal restructuring. Major causalities include Visceral Games and high-profile projects like Project Ragtag, a narrative-driven Star Wars title.

    Continuing its momentum, EA has cancelled the Black Panther game and shut down developer Cliffhanger Studios. EA development president Laura Miele announced the decision to staff in a company memo, signaling another major change in EA’s strategy.

    Importance: This cancellation and studio closure highlights the challenges in developing big budget superhero games and signals EA’s tightening focus on proven franchises. It raises concerns about job security in the industry and may slow the growth of diverse, narrative-driven titles.

    EA Cancelled Black Panther Game But Commits To Helping Affected Staff

    In her memo, Miele acknowledged the difficulty of these decisions, emphasizing the personal impact on employees they’ve worked closely with. She assured that the company is committed to supporting affected staff by helping them find new roles within EA.

    She explained that the move aims to sharpen the company’s focus and concentrate creative efforts on its most promising growth opportunities.

    EA Withholds Exact Layoff Numbers

    EA has not disclosed the exact number of layoffs following the studio closure and game cancellation but confirmed it is fewer than the 300-cut made in April. Employees from both the mobile and central teams are affected.

    Since early 2025, over 2300 jobs have been cut across the industry, with EA’s third round of layoffs pushing that number even further.
