Few franchises in gaming history hold the legacy and emotional weight of Dragon Quest. With its rich storytelling, iconic art style, and unforgettable soundtracks, the series has captivated generations of RPG fans.

As classic titles continue to find new life on modern platforms, speculation is once again swirling around one beloved entry that many consider a hidden gem. Known for its expansive world, rich narrative, and old-school charm, this RPG has long been overdue for a wider reintroduction.

Rumors are circulating that Dragon Quest 7, one of the most acclaimed RPGs from the PS1 era, could be heading to the PS5. According to the report from MP1st, internal documents have surfaced suggesting that Square Enix may be preparing a new version of the game, with release planned next year.

Importance: The Dragon Quest 7 release on PS5 would highlight Square Enix’s focus on modernizing classics, making the game accessible to new fans. It fits the trend of legacy game revivals and could lead to future re-releases, keeping alive ahead of Dragon Quest 12.

The enhanced 3DS remake, Fragments of the Forgotten Past, brought Dragon Quest 7 to new audiences.

The Journey Of Dragon Quest 7: From PS1 To Modern Platforms

Although Dragon Quest 7 originally launched on PS1, it didn’t see a European release until 2016 through its enhanced 3Ds remake, Fragments of the Forgotten Past. Now, speculation suggests that Square Enix could be leveraging that updated version for a modern re-release.

Rather than a full-scale remake, insiders believe the new version may be an upscaled port of the 3Ds edition, optimized for PS5 hardware.

    Square Enix’s HD-2D Remake Strategy

This approach would mirror Square Enix’s recent efforts with the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, and the upcoming Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D collection set to launch on October 30. Given the scope of the 3Ds version, many believe it still holds up well and could easily be adapted for today’s consoles.

Upcoming Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Collection promises more classic adventures on current consoles

A Dragon Quest 7 release on PS5 might also influence how classic RPGs are preserved and appreciated in the digital age. By making these older titles accessible on modern hardware, publishers like Square Enix can set new standards for balancing nostalgia with innovation, encouraging others.
