Glen Schofield, the director of The Callisto Protocol, has revealed that the game’s performance suffered due to its premature release, which was enforced by publisher Krafton.

In an interview with Dan Allen Gaming, Schofield explained that he initially believed he would have more time to complete the game, only to have this decision reversed in early 2022, leading to a rushed December 2022 launch.

Schofield stated that he needed an additional three and a half months to polish the game. He mentioned that Krafton had assured him of this extra time, but later insisted on an earlier release. This sudden change in the schedule increased production pressures and costs, as additional resources and personnel were needed to meet the new deadline.

Importance: Modern video game development has become very time-consuming, making proper time allocation crucial. Polishing is a key phase of development, and neglecting it can significantly harm a game’s quality and reception.

The situation was further complicated by the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused significant disruptions. Many employees at Striking Distance Studios fell ill, and numerous workers left for higher-paying opportunities elsewhere. This period, described by Schofield as the worst year of development in his life, resulted in the cutting of crucial content, including four bosses and two enemy types, from the game.

Reflecting on the experience, Schofield expressed regret over not insisting on the additional development time, acknowledging that the rushed timeline had a detrimental impact on the final product. Despite these challenges, Schofield confirmed his departure from Striking Distance in September 2023, stating he would pursue new opportunities. He also teased plans to announce a new game project in 2024.

Striking Distance Studios was founded by Schofield in 2019 with the goal of creating an original narrative experience within the PUBG universe. However, the project evolved into a standalone sci-fi survival horror game. The Callisto Protocol received mixed reviews upon its release, a month before the successful launch of EA’s Dead Space remake, and reportedly did not meet Krafton’s sales expectations.
