Sony’s Horizon Netflix Show Might Be Cancelled
Ever since Sony’s blockbuster franchise, Horizon, was announced to be getting a Netflix adaptation, we were incredibly excited, and we’re sure many fans were too. However, it appears we should temper our expectations, as the future of the adaptation does not seem very promising.
This is because the Netflix series based on PlayStation’s Horizon franchise is reportedly not progressing at the streaming giant. The project, led by The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman, has hit a standstill, according to Rolling Stone. The halt is part of a larger narrative accusing Blackman of toxic, bullying, manipulative and retaliatory behavior.
Importance: Video games adaptations in the film industry have become a major growing point as games like The Last of Us and Fallout, just to name a few, has seen incredible success after their respective shows turned out successful.
It remains unclear whether the series will continue under a different creative leader or if it has been entirely scrapped. However, Blackman was very excited for the project when it was first announced, he even stated,
āGuerrilla Games has created an incredibly lush and vivid world of man and machine who find themselves on a collision course to oblivion. My writing partner on this, Michelle Lovretta, and I are thrilled to be able to expand this remarkable IP into a series for all types of viewers.ā
If things take a turn for the worse, the show might be entirely scrapped, but we hope to avoid such a future. A Netflix show for Horizon would elevate the franchise to new heights if successful, as seen with recent video game adaptations.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the Horizon series, Sony continues to push forward with other gaming adaptations. A TV adaptation of God of War is currently in the works with Amazon.
Multiple Horizon video game projects are also in development. Later this year, Lego Horizon Adventure will be released for PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Guerrilla Games has announced plans to expand the Horizon universe with an online co-op project featuring a new cast of characters and a unique stylized look.
Additionally, a Horizon Zero Dawn remaster for PS5 is reportedly in development. It was also previously reported that Guerrilla is planning an online spin-off, in addition to a planned trilogy of Horizon games. It has also been claimed that Lineage and Guild Wars studio NCSoft has struck a deal with Sony to create a Horizon MMORPG.
While the future of the Netflix series remains uncertain, the Horizon franchise continues to thrive with a slew of upcoming projects across different platforms.
