Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Ending Was Supposed To Be Confusing
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been hailed as one of the best titles in the franchise, yet its ending left many players confused, however, it was supposed to be that way.
During an interview, Naoki Hamaguchi and Yoshinori Kitase, key figures behind the action role-playing game, were asked about the confusion fans experienced regarding the game’s conclusion, how they should interpret these new developments, and what kind of response the development team was hoping to elicit from players.
Naoki Hamaguchi and Yoshinori Kitase revealed that the game’s ending was intentionally designed to be ambiguous.
Importance: The ending of a game is crucial, as it can shape the player’s overall experience and significantly influence how the story is remembered.
Kitase explained that the development team considered the emotional weight of Cloud’s perspective in the original Final Fantasy 7, particularly his sense of immense loss. This feeling, he noted, stems from Cloud losing someone he deeply cared for, leaving him with a profound hole in his heart.
When adapting this in the Remake series, the team aimed to convey not only the loss of a loved one but also the emotional struggle of someone unable to forget and accept such a loss, reflecting the intense difficulty of moving on while facing the possibility of further loss.
Addressing fan theories, Kitase commented on the speculation surrounding how much the Remake’s story will diverge from the original. He acknowledged that many players have wondered,
“How much will this story change?”
But he assured fans that the development team has always stayed true to the spirit of the original game. Kitase stated that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy will not betray the expectations of longtime fans.
However, given that 27 years have passed since the release of the 1998 game, the team believes there are certain aspects that they can only explore now, in the remake, to bring a new sense of happiness and satisfaction to players. What these changes will be exactly is something Kitase hopes fans will experience soon.
